Married Firsts
My wife and I just celebrated our six week anniversary. That phrase doesn't really work, though, since the word anniversary is specific to years instead of weeks. Still, when you're a newly-wed, pretty much everything is cause for celebration--so in addition to "weekversaries" and "monthversaries," we also celebrate "married firsts."
"Married firsts" are, duh, the first time we've done something as a married couple.
All sorts of things are noteworthy since they're all happening for the first time. "Oh look, babe! It's our first Sunday as a married couple!" Then, "oh look, babe! It's our first road-trip as a married couple!" Followed by lots of other married firsts: Holidays, Bible studies, vacation days, birthdays.
(Noting these events almost always leads to making out, so I find it rewarding to note ALL firsts. "Look babe! It's our first time eating coleslaw with no carrots as a married couple!")
Not all married firsts are cause for celebrating, though. We've already experienced a few firsts that I don't enjoy. It's hard to make out after the first set of bills come in. "Oh look, babe! It's our first reminder that we're not on our honeymoon anymore!"
(Side note: Married firsts can even be painful. Our first married "wife slams husbands fingers in window" was not followed so much by joy as by a yelp and words that shall not be repeated.)
However, as big as married firsts have been, I've also begun to appreciate the married seconds and married thirds. As the newness wears off of the most basic things that have been exciting, it's almost just as exciting to see things become habits.
For example, our first Bible time was neat, but nowhere near as good as the one we had last night.
I guess that's good, because married firsts won't last forever, and they're really not super important in the long run. When we look back in six years, it's not going to be important to note "that one time we had fun together." Instead, we'll (hopefully) be looking back to see "that time when the fun began."
Then we can celebrate our "Married Habits."
